William Hervey was the fourth son of John, Lord Hervey (1696-1743) and Mary Lepel, daughter of Brigadier General Nicholas Lepel. He was the younger brother of 2nd, 3rd and 4th Earls of Bristol.

He accompanied General Braddock's expedition to North America as a volunteer in the 44th Essex Regiment in 1755, returning in 1763. He was Captain and Colonel of the 1st Guards in 1776 and was made a General in 1798. His notebooks reveal him to have been a generous and charitable figure to those in need. He is buried in the Hervey family vault at Ickworth Church, Suffolk.

The Charitable Trust

The charity is a UK registered Charity with number 310347 and was formed on 31st January 1817. The charity was originally created to help promote education for those under the age of 25 years, who or whose parents are resident in the parishes of Ickworth, Chedburgh, Horringer, and adjoining parishes in Suffolk.

The trustees are the 8th Marquess of Bristol, Revd Canon Max Osborne (Rector of Horringer cum Ickworth) and Simon Pott FRICS. Grants are given once a year.

Due to changing times and needs of applicants, in more recent years the trustees also welcome grant requests from applicants who are resident within the specified areas, but who may not conform to the original age or purpose specified, but who can show how a one off grant could make a meaningful difference to them or their family, and help alleviate short or long term difficulties.

An application form to apply for a grant can be downloaded here.
